Troubleshooting Indoor Gas Lights

banner-gaslights-humphrey-rv.jpgTroubleshooting Indoor Gas Lights

1. Gas light mantle has turned black.            Bad mantles (too short inside would get too hot and burn out mantle).                Replace mantle.

2. Bunsen has spider webs (most common reason for mantles turning black).          Clean Bunsen.

3. Need high altitude nozzle (above 4500 ft. - has smaller orifice).  Install new high altitude nozzle (1.9 - 52A).

4. Using incorrect orifice for natural gas vs. propane.            Install new natural gas nozzle (1.9 - 51A).

5. Gas light mantle is broken.          Touching mantle (pre-formed will crack and burn through even with flames).                Replace mantle.

6. Breezes, bugs and vibrations will also break mantle.        Replace mantle.

7. Gas light pulsates or flickers - does not stay lit.   If gas light is new, nozzle (orifice) could be clogged.         Blow air through to clean. Because the orifice is a very soft brass do not insert anything in the hole. May need new orifice.

8. Check Bunsen for spider webs, lint or fiber.         Clean Bunsen.

9. Check for lint or fiber in burner nose screen. Clean burner nose screen. May have to replace burner nose.

10. Gas line used should be no smaller than 3/8". If 1/4" must be used, run can be no longer than 8 ft.           Check installation.

11. Regulator is bad, LP gas must be 11" on water column (6 oz. mercury) pressure. Check installation. Who installed? Was the testing equipment correct? Was regulator at tank checked? Check at wall connection also.

12. Wallplate may have been bent during installation, impairing gas flow.     Loosen installation (but wallplate may have to be replaced.)

13. OPK Kit - one light is brighter than others.            May be a mantle problem.          Try another mantle - or try switching mantles.

14. Plugged nozzle (orifice) in wallplate.       Blow air through to orifice) in wallplate.

15. Flames shooting from mantles.          Seal has been broken.      Each time burner nose is removed(Replace Seal)
